Embracing the Messy Middle: How Creativity Teaches Us to Keep Going
If you’ve ever sat down to paint, journal, or try a new craft, you probably know this moment: you’re halfway through and suddenly you think—this looks terrible.
I call it the “messy middle.”
It’s the point where the vision in your head doesn’t match what’s on the canvas (or page, or table). It’s also the exact place where most people want to quit.
But here’s the truth: the messy middle is where creativity really happens.
Why the Messy Middle Matters
It builds resilience. Every time you push through the awkward stage, you practice sticking with something hard.
It sparks discovery. What feels like a mistake often becomes the most unique, beautiful part of your finished piece.
It mirrors life. Just like in art, the “in-between” seasons of our lives rarely look polished—but they’re shaping us into something new.
3 Ways to Push Through the Messy Middle in Art (and Life)
Step back. Literally. Stand up and look at your project from a distance. You’ll see the bigger picture instead of obsessing over small details.
Change the tool. Swap brushes, grab a palette knife, or even use your fingers. Sometimes a fresh tool changes everything.
Keep moving. Don’t overthink—just add another layer, stroke, or word. Momentum is often what turns “messy” into “magic.”
My Own Messy Middle
I’ll never forget my first sea glass guitar project. Halfway through, I hated it—gaps everywhere, colors I thought clashed. I wanted to pull everything off the canvas. But I let it dry and stepped back… and it became the one piece people couldn’t stop commenting on. What I thought was a disaster turned out to be a favorite.
That’s the power of not giving up.
Your Invitation
If you’ve been tempted to quit on something—art, journaling, or even just giving yourself time to be creative—I want you to remember this: the messy middle is not the end. It’s the turning point.
That’s why I create classes, kits, and upcoming projects like [insert name of project you want to lead into]—because sometimes we just need a little encouragement (and the right supplies!) to keep going.
